Let There Be Cake

When VV had their picture day in August, somehow I managed to not get my picture taken.  I took my advisement to get their picture taken, but when I asked if I was supposed to get mine done as well, the person in charge said no.  It turns out that the rest of the staff got their pictures taken in the morning before all the kids.  D’oh!

Yesterday was the makeup day.  I went to the doctor in the middle of the day, and BARELY made it to VV in time.  I walked in with my backpack and my cake hat (for more information about my cake hat, see March 30 of 2007) because I have decided I want to keep my hat there.  When I walked in, the two P.E. coaches (I don’t even know their names) were in line to get their pictures taken, but that’s all.  I was so excited that I made it in time, and I asked the picture people if I could take my picture, too.  One woman asked me, “Do you work here?”

I resisted the urge to say, “No, I don’t.  I just was walking by, decided to come into the school, and get my picture taken.”  Instead, I said, “Yes, I’m a teacher.”

I then turned to the two P.E. coaches and asked, “Do you want to take your picture with my Cake Hat?”  They both smiled, and politely declined.  I pushed, “Oh come on, you know you want to.”   J  They both kind of laughed at me and suggested that I wear the hat.  But I figured the principal wouldn’t appreciate a formal yearbook picture with one member of the staff wearing a cake on her head (though I personally think that would be awesome).

They took their picture, and then I sat down for mine.  I am very happy that the VV picture people did not attempt to make me say something stupid (like “chicken feet”), and instead let me just smile as though I am not 4 years old.  Thank you very much.  After they took my yearbook photo, one of the photo people asked, “Do you want to take your I.D. picture with your hat?”

My eyes LIT up.  “YES!”  I jumped up and ran to get my hat, and came back as fast as I could.  I sat down, and they took my picture, and now my VV school I.D. is me in my cake hat!!

You KNOW you’re jealous =D

Mr. G saw what I had done, and started pouting, saying he wanted his I.D. to be in his Mickey Mouse hat.  He went out and asked the photo people if he could retake his I.D. picture, and they happily agreed.  Now he has a picture in Mickey Mouse ears, and I have one with a Cake Hat!

Those crazy music teachers.  What will they do next?

Did My Brain Just Explode?

The strangest thing just happened.

I got home today and decided that, for the first time in months, I’d take my contacts out and let them soak for a bit.  They’ve been bothering me the last couple days, and today my right eye kept on randomly tearing.  I searched and found an old contact container from who knows when, washed it out, filled it with solution, took out my contacts and closed the lids.  I put on my glasses, and have been resting for about 3 hours.

I decided to put the contacts back in, because I don’t like sleeping without them (I have the kind you’re supposed to keep in for a month, then throw away.  You never have to take them out!  They’re so cool!).  So I went to the bathroom, and opened the RIGHT side of my contacts case.  I took out a contact and tried to put it in my eye, but it started to sting so I took it out.  I washed it and tried again.  This time, I hear a “pop” sound.  Eyes and “pop” sounds usually aren’t good…though that’s been known to happen when air bubbles are escaping.  I look around, and everything is fuzzy.  “Well that’s not right,” I thought, so I took it out and put it back in the case.

So…the contact is back in the solution in the case.  I take it out one more time and put it on my eye.  I notice that it’s not quite gripping my eyeball with much vigor (the way it normally does).  I get it in and look around…and it’s still fuzzy!!  Really really fuzzy!  I was so confused, so I put on my glasses thinking, “Maybe it’s not sitting on my eye properly.”  With glasses it’s still fuzzy.

I was so confused.

So I took off my glasses and take out the contact from my right eye.  And then, for no reason, I closed my LEFT eye.  AND I COULD SEE!  I looked down at the contact in my hand, closed my left eye again…and yup.  I could see out my right eye.

My first thought was….it’s a miracle!  I can see!

I put the right contact back in the right side of the contact case.  I take out the left contact from the case and put it in my eye, and I can see perfectly.  WHAT’S GOING ON???  I was so utterly confused.  I only had one contact in my left eye, yet I could see perfectly out BOTH eyes.  And I’m really really blind.  I can’t see the big E on the eye chart.

So I look in the mirror, really closely, at my right eye.  And then I poke it.  There’s a contact in it!!!

At this point, I thought I was having some sort of mental breakdown.  How did the contact get in my right eye?  I look in the contact case, and there’s still a contact in the right side of the case.  I take it out, put it in my hand, and reconfirm that there is, in fact, still a contact IN my right eye.

I am SO confused.

I have no idea what just happened.  I would think that I had just left an old contact in my case….but….when I originally opened the case it was dry.  I actually checked for old contacts to make sure this wouldn’t happen.  And wouldn’t the old contact be all dried and shriveled up?  I haven’t used the case in months??  And then I washed it out with water to be extra careful.

I’ve entered the Twilight Zone.

My Hero!!

Tonight, on channel 6, there’s the New York Philharmonic Opening Night Gala.  It is an all Dvorak concert, and it features none other than my favorite guy ever: Yo-Yo Ma.  I’m watching him play the Dvorak Cello Concerto as I type (which is my Everest.  Seriously.  This concerto is SO incredibly hard…especially for the small handed).  I was watching Beauty and the Geek earlier (because I’m taping the New York Phil concert), but flipped the channel during the commercial.

I love Yo-Yo Ma.

I’m not kidding.  I think we should be best friends =)  Well, not really, because who wants a best friend who is constantly bugging you for tips?  I’d settle for Yo-Yo Ma’s annoying neighbor.  But then, how could I practice knowing Yo-Yo Ma could hear me?  Sigh.  Dilemmas dilemmas.  Anyways, it is SO GOOD.  It is so ridiculously impressive.  He is impressive.  And I love his cello.  And I love that the camera is getting all sots of angles so I can check out his bowing technique and….steal it.  And steal ideas for bowings and fingerings.

::: dreamy sigh :::

And he makes fun faces when he plays.  And he got new glasses.  And I’m going to go see him in November when he comes to Orange County!!!  And I’m starting every sentence with “and” but I’m too excited to care.

He makes everything look so easy.

And he played the part I always mess up out of tune too, which made me feel better J  Sigh.  I love Yo-Yo Ma.

Dream A Little Dream

I had this strange dream last night involving Harry Potter.  Apparently I was part of his crew, and we were trying to escape a dragon.  I don’t remember much, but really…that’s enough.

Today was a good day.  I was extra cheerful today for no apparent reason, and it got better and better.  My rehearsals at PV were really good, 4th grade rocked at VV, 5th grade was okay, and the concerts at middle school were really very good.  (yay!)  And then I came home, ate some dinner, practiced, watched Scrubs, practiced some more…and now here I am.

I miss my iPod.

What else?  Not much.  OH!  I saw this crazy youtube video of a 13 year old playing a really really hard cello concerto.  Seriously.  It’s amazing.

Quit Stabbing Me!

Being the accident prone person that I am, I am also extremely cautious and careful.  I do what I can.  I wash my hands.  I gargle.  I do not attach wheels to my feet (though I still want some heelies).  So when handling knives, I am normally a careful person.  However, I revel in the fact that every time I’ve done something stupid with a knife (like trying to open a pickle jar with one) and have managed to stab myself, it has always been on my cello hand and thus I have been unscathed.  Now that I have tuning calluses as well (on my thumb and index finger), I feel even better guarded than normal.

So today, while I was washing a knife (a small one at that), I sneezed, and proceeded to stab my ring finger on my right hand.  Great.  One of 3 unprotected fingers.  Of course.  I looked at my finger, and nothing happened.  I waited, and nothing happened.  And then all of a sudden blood came gushing out.

Boo.

This is why I have tons of bandaids in my house.  Normal bandaids, bacon bandaids, Sesame Street bandaids….you can never have too many.

Stupid Cyberspace

Have you ever had the experience of, without meaning to, finding yourself on youtube?  For a couple years, whenever Chapman University has needed cello players, they have called me.  I sit in the back and play along after one rehearsal.  It’s fun and I get paid and most of the time I get to play some fun music.  All in all, a good time.  So I tried to search for the Chapman Orchestra to see what they are doing in upcoming concerts (in case they need a cellist again), but when I googled it I got a youtube link.  It’s the Chapman Orchestra playing Dvorak’s 8th Symphony (the one we did last year!....except a different movement).

And for a whole 3 seconds, part of my face can be seen (at 5 minutes and 10 seconds).

Sigh.

That’s not cool.  I don’t want to be on youtube, no matter how insignificant a role I may have played.  Boo.  BOO!

It’s not really that big of a deal.  I just don’t like to randomly come across myself on the internet.  It’s happened before.  One conductor I performed under posted pictures on his professional website, and I was in a ton of them.  Eugh.  No thank you.

Otherwise…I’m running really low on sleep.  It’s kind of disturbing, really.  I’ve gone to be somewhere between 1am and 4am this entire week, yet am not tired.  I feel…the same as always.  I hope my body isn’t about to implode.  That would be sad (though much cleaner than exploding, I suppose).

Hey, there’s another youtube video of some high school playing the same Dvorak we played last year =D
